Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi’s Thoughts on Secularism and Communism: An Analytical Study

Abstract

Modern movements in the Western world have introduced innovative ideas in the political and social arena. Secularism is one of them as it is recognized as the best form of government for a multi-religious society which means that believers of all religions should be free to live according to their own religion and the state should keep itself free from religious coercion. Same is the case with the theory of communism. There have been some Muslim scholars who have strongly opposed secularism and communism and called them anti-Islamic ideologies. But it was just an extremist reaction. This cannot be called a thought-provoking or solution finding positive approach. But in this regard, Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi has shown great flexibility and open mindedness in his thoughts where no intensity and intolerance can be find. Maulana Sindhi is a modern thinker and religious scholar. Allah Almighty bestowed him the opportunity and capability to discover the solution to modern issues from religious perspectives in a positive manner. This aptitude became the center of his intellectual and ijtihad talents. So he led the Islamic movements of her time religiously, socially, politically and economically. He effectively presented the accurate Islamic thoughts to counter the issues of secularism and communism. Maulana Sindhi considers the teachings of Imam Shah Waliullah Dehlavi as the basis for his thoughts and ideas. This article brings a fruitful analytical research study on Maulana Sindhi’s thoughts on secularism and communism which further can open the new dimensions for researchers.
